October 2017: The Moments In Between

I take hundreds of photos every month, and most of them don’t get shared with anyone, let alone online. And yet the moments in time that those photos capture are just as important a part of our story as the other images that I do choose to share.  I created this blog as a way of documenting our lives, a way of watching the girls grow into who they’re going to be and a way of remembering who they once were. It’s something I want them to be able to look back on as they get older, because memories fade but (digital) photographs don’t.

It’s easy (and tempting) to only focus on sharing the fun bits, the memorable parts, the highlights and the celebrations like holidays or birthdays. But I’m learning more and more as I continue through this crazy journey of motherhood that it’s really important to me that I capture the ordinary, everyday times that we spend together as well. The bits of the jigsaw that fill in the gaps to complete the picture. The tantalising glimpses into who our girls are becoming.

The chaos, the calm and all the moments in between.

This monthly feature – The Moments In Between – is a space for me to share all of those magical bits that would otherwise just stay in a folder on my laptop, never to see the light of day.

OCTOBER

October was dominated by our fantastic family trip-of-a-lifetime to Florida.  We had a brilliant time of course – I quickly learned that it’s impossible to go to Disney and not feel the magic.  In the spirit of honesty there were more than a few difficult moments where the heat, the tiredness and everything being different from what we’re used to overwhelmed us all one by one, but the high points of our holiday vastly outweighed the slightly trickier ones so I’m calling it a win overall.

There are a mix of images from Florida and the final part of half term where we tried to squeeze in a few Halloween-related festivities amidst the jet lag.  I feel all jumbled up season-wise having gone from 30 degree heat, shorts & TShirts to fluffy jumpers, hats & boots and editing summery photos whilst beginning to plan Christmas presents!

Unusually, I’ve decided to include some photos from my phone in this month’s post.  Normally I only share images I take on my DSLR but these quick, spontaneous snaps were so very much a part of the ‘moments in between’ this month that I had to include them. Life isn’t perfect, not every image has to be perfect and the moments in between aren’t always perfect.  Or maybe sometimes, they’re more perfect than the so-called ‘perfect’ moments either side…

Every time I write this monthly post I find that I have new favourite photos and this one is no exception – we made so many memories on our trip and they’ll last a lifetime.  Each and every one of these photographs represents a moment that will stay with me forever, each and every one of them is part of what makes us who we are and each and every one of them tells part of our story.

This is us.
